Fried Green Tomatoes
To live in the south and not have this treat is just a shame, but a bigger shame is not having this easy to follow recipe to serve to your guests. This recipe is a great side dish with a fish fry, with fried chicken, or as a snack. If you haven't seen the movie Fried Green Tomatoes, you should, it is a warm hearted story and will make you want to savor a little of the southern flavor.
Ingredients:
- 4 firm green tomatoes
- Salt
- pepper
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 egg
- 1/3 cup cornmeal
- 1/2 cup fine seasoned bread crumbs
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
Cut tomatoes into thick slices, I recommend around ½ inch each and salt and pepper each side. Set them aside once this is done and proceed to set up your dredging stations. In a shallow glass dish, put in flour one shallow dish, (pie plates are ideal), Mix egg and milk together and place in a separate dish , mix bread crumbs and cornmeal together and put in a separate dish. You now have your dredging stations set up for your tomatoes.
Dip tomatoes in flour and coat both sides, then place into the milk and egg mixture, and lastly coat in bread crumb/cornmeal mixture.
Fry in a heated skillet 4 minutes on each side until tomatoes are nice and golden. Add additional salt if needed.
