Cooked Mustard greens and Ham hocks |
I love cooking up a big batch of greens. They're tasty, good for you and you can do so much with them. Mustard greens have a peppery taste that can marry well with many dishes like soups, and pastas. Try them with some ham hocks and you'll see how much you'll enjoy them. Since I love the crock pot this is another recipe especially developed for crock pots. If you don't own a crock pot, you really need to try them out they make cooking great meals so easy.
Ingredients:
1 large onion diced
1 lb of Mustard Greens cleaned and dried (don't worry you can buy them this way)
½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 ½ tablespoons of salt (it seems like a lot but we're making a big batch)
2 ham hocks
2 cups of water
4 gloves of garlic
Instructions:
Step 1:
Dice and chop one large onion and add to crock pot

Step 2:
Add in 4 garlic cloves. You can dice them if you like, I added mine whole.
Step 3:
Add in two ham hocks
Ham hocks |
Step 4:
Pack in 1 lb of Mustard greens
Step five:
Add salt and crushed pepper flakes
Step six:
Add in four cups of water to get things going.
Step seven:
Once your greens have cooked down a great deal, if you wish add in some more and an additional two to three cups of water. The idea is to make sure you have enough water to cook all the new greens.
Note:You may need to add more as the greens cook down. We want to cook these until the ham hocks are tender and falling apart.
