Hot mulled wine for the Holidays

Mulled wineImage via Wikipedia

Christmas in South Carolina is all about family traditions. One favorite tradition is enjoying mulled wine on Christmas eve. Once the children have slipped off to bed and have enjoyed their Old fashioned Eggnog, it is time for mom and dad and perhaps a few friends and family to gather around for a nice warm beverage. Mulled wine during the holidays is a long time tradition in many families.
This hot mulled wine beverage will chase the chill out of the air, and help even mom and dad sleep a little better before being awakened at 4 in the morning.

Ingredients:

3-4 cups of good red wine. Merlot is a good choice
2 1/2 cups of apple juice
1 tsp. allspice (taste and judge how much you like after adding the rest of the ingredients
1 tsp. ground cloves, or 12 whole cloves (again, add at the end of this recipe to determine the right amount you prefer)
3 cinnamon sticks
1 orange sliced
1 lemon sliced
3/4 cup of granulated sugar

In a large pot add apple juice, sugar, sliced orange and lemon, heat on low to medium for a few minutes. Take off of the heat, and slowly add in wine stirring occasionally. Heat to just under a boil. Add in spices and check for personal preference.
Serve warm in mugs.
Tip: To keep mulled wine warm during the evening, transfer to a crock pot on low heat setting.
